Black Sesame Sweet Soup

40 min · 4 servings · By FiveFlavor Kitchen · Reviewed by Dr. M. Wu, L.Ac.

My grandmother insisted black sesame was the reason she still had black hair at eighty. Science is silent; the soup, however, is delicious.

Why This Elixir Works

Black sesame is sweet and neutral, entering the Liver and Kidney. In traditional practice it nourishes jing (deep reserves) and supports the hair and bones.

Ingredients

Black sesame seeds 1/2 cup
Glutinous rice flour 1/4 cup
Water 5 cups
Rock sugar 4 tbsp

Find these at Asian markets, Whole Foods, or via our Herb Grimoire.

Instructions

1

Toast sesame in a dry pan 2-3 minutes until fragrant. Grind to a paste.

2

Whisk sesame paste with glutinous rice flour and 1 cup water.

3

Bring remaining water to a simmer; whisk in the sesame mixture.

4

Stir until glossy and thickened, 5-8 minutes. Sweeten and serve warm.
